Distance and Open Learning (DOL) in Nepal
The distance and open mode of learning in Nepal is much demanded mode of education. Despite being recognized as highly viable and appropriate means of imparting knowledge to people DOL have not been so significant. In the national level, distance learning was initiated in the year 1957, but it has failed to reach the masses as anticipated. Even after formulation of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) policy, few years ago and recent establishment of Open and Distance Education Centre (ODEC), the programmes on offer are limited. It seems like ODL in national level is just an extension of teacher training programme of 1950s.On the other hand, the online courses offered through foreign universities are not in the reach of general masses in Nepal. Therefore, NIT, in association with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is providing many courses in Nepal making the higher education accessible and affordable.
